PRP Treatment

Microneedling

Microneedling uses needles designed to help create micro channels within the skin. This will help stimulate the skin's collagen production. The collagen production increase has a two-pronged effect:

  • Make the skin more absorbent to topical skincare products
  • Boost the collagen to improve the elasticity of the skin, which helps in the treatment of acne scars, fine lines, and other skin blemishes

Benefits and What to Expect

Microneedling stimulates the growth of new skin cells. The appearance of fine lines and scars will be reduced, and there will also be an overall improvement to combat hyperpigmentation. Minor blemishes and scars may only require one single treatment. However, deeper lines and scar tissue may require multiple visits for the desired visual appearance.

Following the conclusion of the procedure the skin will be tender and red. Expected results will not appear immediately. It takes the skin time to begin generating the new skin cells. Your medical provider will give you a more concrete timeline of when to begin seeing changes. Additionally, every individual’s skin is unique therefore some individuals may experience more dramatic results sooner.

Who is a Potential Candidate For the Procedure?

Microneedling is noninvasive and suitable for anyone who is interested in improving their skin appearance. This is often used by those who have acne scars left over from their teenage years. Fine lines may appear from natural aging or from other scaring issues.

However, some individuals may want to consult their primary healthcare provider ahead of time, as there are increased risks for anyone who has a bleeding disorder or patients taking anticoagulant medication(s).

Pain Management

With microneedling, topical numbing cream can be used for patients with sensitive skin. The topical application is a numbing agent, so while you might feel some pressure applied to your skin, you will not feel the procedure at all. This numbing agent will wear off after a few hours. Once the numbing agent has worn off it will feel like you have a light cut or scab, so there will be some tenderness to it and, as it heals, you'll likely have an itching sensation. It's important to not pick or scratch at it.

Downtime After the Procedure

The downtown will depend on the depth of the procedure. For shallow depths, you'll have redness for 24 hours. If set at a deeper depth you'll remain red for two to three days.

Additional Facts

Microneedling is an outpatient procedure. You'll be in and out of the office in a couple hours, at most. The skin will be tender for a few days as it heals, so listen to your provider for how long you should avoid your skincare routine. You will schedule a follow up visit so the provider can assess how your skin is taking to the procedure. Typically, it is recommended to wait between four and six weeks for additional sessions. This gives your skin time to heal and all the results to be realized.
