Facial Fat Graft
About Facial Fat Graft
Facial fat grafting, also known as a fat transfer or facial fat rejuvenation, is a procedure that involves removing fat from parts of the body in order to introduce them to the face. This is usually done to fight the most aggressive signs of aging, such as wrinkling and sagging skin, and to replace facial volume that has been lost over time.
A facial fat graft is a minimally invasive surgery, making use of the most natural materials, fat from your own body where it’s at its most plentiful. With modern liposuction techniques, we can efficiently and effectively transfer fat from the stomach, hips, thighs, and other areas with small injections that leave nigh invisible scars.
Benefits of Facial Fat Graft and What to Expect
This treatment is used for a wide host of improvements to the face. It’s often used to combat the signs of aging, showing effectiveness in treating visible signs areas like nasolabial folds, marionette lines, flattened cheeks, hollows under the eyes, and sagging jaws. By restoring facial volume, we can help create a fuller, softer face and reduce the appearance of wrinkles and sagging.
Facial fat grafts can also be used for general improvements to facial contour and definition. As such, we may be able to help you achieve a soft, rounder face with fuller features. There is an immediate difference in your appearance following a facial fat graft, but it is important to manage your expectations as it takes six months for the changes to finalize. Some of the fat that is initially grafted will be reabsorbed and will not last until the end of that period.
In order to ensure realistic expectations and to know what you can really expect from your facial fat graft procedure, we recommend getting in touch with us at Shonan Beauty and arranging a consultation.
Potential Candidates for Facial Fat Graft
Candidacy for a facial fat graft is decided on an individual basis during your consultation. Primarily, you must have enough fat to harvest from chosen areas around the body for the graft. As it is an elective surgery, we have to ensure that you are in good general health and without severe chronic conditions that may make it in any way unsafe. Similarly, those who smoke are not good candidates for cosmetic surgery so it may be necessary to quit smoking for weeks or even months to reduce your risk. However, in terms of age, there is no limit so long as you are an adult.
Pain Management Methods
There is little pain during the injection of fat into the specified areas of the face. We make use of local or topical anesthetics to numb the area and make patients as comfortable as possible and recommend the use of a simple over-the-counter analgesia, such as paracetamol after the fact.
We also provide local anesthesia for the area that we will be removing the fat from, whether it be the thighs, belly, or otherwise. Following the surgery, there may be some discomfort, such as a dull ache, for 1 to 4 weeks, but this can easily be treated with safe, simple painkillers.
Downtime After the Facial Fat Graft Procedure
After your procedure, there will be downtime to wait for bruising and swelling caused by the surgery to subside. The swelling is at its most significant point during the first week, and we recommend that, in most cases, you allow up 9-14 days to rest and allow it to subside. Within three weeks, your appearance should be normalized, and any discomfort should be gone so you should be fit to return to work and your normal social life without issue.
The specifics of how long it takes for swelling to subside entirely depends on a few factors. This includes the amount of fat that is injected into the face. More fat may need to combat the signs of aging present in someone who is 50 compared to someone who is 30, for instance, so it may take more time to recover. Exercise should be limited during this time as well.
Three Most Commonly Asked Questions
Are the results of a fat transfer permanent?: By and large, the results that you see after the six months it takes the transfer to completely settle should be permanent. During this six month period, some of the fat cells that we transfer to the face are not going to survive and will be reabsorbed into the body. However, we account for the absorption process and often overfill the face with a little extra fat to ensure that you get as close to the results you want at the end.
Is a facial fat transfer good for weight loss?: While we do use liposuction to harvest fat from areas of the body such as the belly or thighs, weight loss is not a focus of the facial fat transfer. In order to add volume to the fact, we do not need enough fat to make a difference to other parts of the body. It can resolve some stubborn pockets of fat, but it’s important to recognize this is not a weight or fat reduction procedure by design.
Is the transfer affected by changes in weight following the procedure: It is best to ensure you are at a stable weight and to maintain your pre-surgery weight following the procedure. Fat transfer means that the fat cells are permanently transferred to the face, but they still behave like fat cells, meaning they can shrink or grow with weight loss. They shouldn’t change too much with the natural ups-and-downs in weight that we all experience as part of a healthy, balanced life.
Facial fat transfer is a minimally invasive, natural solution to the facial signs of aging, and is largely safe thanks to the fact that we’re using completely natural materials harvested directly from the body.
